What is a Purim spiel?
For centuries, Jews have gathered on Purim to retell the story of the Book of Esther with a show known as a Purim spiel. We celebrate the tale of Esther growing from a young woman whose guardian sends her off to the king with hardly a word, to a queen who bravely faces challenging odds to save her people. In recent history, it has become commonplace to tell the story through parodies of well known music like Elton John, Hamilton, or Disney’s Frozen.
What makes a great Purim spiel?
A great Purim spiel will not only retell the story, but bring the characters to life and fill in the gaps the text leaves for us. Every spiel is an opportunity to explore how Esther felt being ordered to the palace, how Mordechai felt about being cut out of Esther’s life once she became Queen, or what Haman’s backstory might reveal about his villainy. And like all great Bible stories, a Purim spiel should help us better understand our own place in the world.
